Hi all.

I am looking to buy a property in Aruba, probably in the Gold Coast development.

Ideally my girlfriend & I would like to stay in Aruba for about 5 months every winter. We wouldn't need to work in Aruba as we have income from elsewhere. Looking at the Dimas visa info, I can see that as the owner I would be able to stay for up to 180 days per year, which would be fine for me.

However, it seems that if she isn't part owner then my girlfriend would only get a 30 day tourist visa and then she would be at the mercy of Dimas to extend it to a maximum of 90 days. If ever that extension isn't granted for some reason that would be a really big problem for us.

We are both UK citizens. Does Aruba law allow for "non-equal" joint ownership, eg 80% me and 20% her? If so, would that entitle her to the same 180 day stay? Or would a solution perhaps be to own the property through an Aruba (or non-Aruba) company? Not to evade any taxes but just to make it easier for non-equal joint ownership? Also, would a "deed of registered partnership" from an Aruba notary help?

She has income from rental properties in the UK... more than enough to live with me in Aruba, but not at the "Afl 100000" level required for the Dimas "retired or interest-rate earner without guaranteed income" category.

What do other non-married long-stay non-residents do? We would be very grateful for any advice.

Thanks, Max. :-)

Hello Max,

I have a two bedrooms three baths townhouse in Gold Coast for sale. Did you buy the property yet? If you are interested, please contact me at lyy8@hotmail.com

In terms of your girlfriend's visa issue, I think she could renew the visa to extend the stay. She will need someone who owns the property to "sponsor" her stay. That is what I know unless they change the law.

Hi Sue,

My understanding from the DIMAS website is that only an Aruban national can sponsor somebody. But if a non-national property owner (ie hopefully me) can sponsor then that would be perfect. :-)

Looks like I may need to find a good immigration lawyer for more advice?

Yes, I am still looking for a property. I have sent you an email.

Thanks, Max
